Everything We Know About ÊMIA’s “The Plot” and “Gut Feeling”:

The Plot

Written and produced by Anh Le (ÊMIA) herself, “The Plot” builds on an arcade-inspired ’90s beat that evolves into rhythmic, layered production as her vocals enter. Blending verses seamlessly with the melody, the track channels an emotional undercurrent that connects with listeners while showcasing ÊMIA’s skill as both a songwriter and producer. The pre-chorus features subtly processed, futuristic vocals that lead into an upbeat yet heartfelt chorus, where her falsettos add a striking and memorable lift.

Lyrically, “The Plot” explores ÊMIA’s journey of self-discovery and risk-taking, touching on regret, anxiety, and the urge to seize fleeting opportunities. One of its most striking images is a moment of wanting to share everything with a past friend on a balcony—a snapshot of vulnerability and nostalgia. Known for channelling her own anxieties into her songwriting, ÊMIA once again blends confessional storytelling with layered metaphor, inviting listeners to step into the role of that lost friend and experience the song’s emotions firsthand.

Accompanying the single is a music video co-directed by ÊMIA and Brittany Drays. Drays handled the cinematography while ÊMIA oversaw the editing and also takes the lead role on screen, primarily portraying the journalist at the heart of the story. The video also features Richard Trautwein and Annie Behrens. It opens with a “Breaking News” segment, complete with scrolling headlines such as “Brooklyn woman sends emotionally charged text to former associate,” “Close friends encouraged her to send it,” and “Three years of ‘no contact’ breached!!!!”—framing the playful, news-style narrative that follows. Early scenes focus on ÊMIA interviewing Annie, setting up the faux-news motif and establishing the story’s quirky, journalistic tone.

As the video progresses, the narrative gradually builds toward ÊMIA’s reunion with Richard. Their embrace—lingering, warm, and shown multiple times—becomes the emotional heart of the video, balancing the satirical news elements with genuine sentiment. This repeated hug captures the depth of a long-awaited friendship, providing a striking and memorable climax that resonates throughout the rest of the visual.

The video intercuts the journalistic-style scenes—including the press segment, the interview with Annie, and a news studio setup—with striking performance shots of ÊMIA delivering the track. These sequences maintain the real yet satirical tone established earlier while keeping the energy high. In addition, street scenes showcase ÊMIA walking with model-like confidence, bringing a strong sense of fashion to the visuals. She wears a baby-blue sleeveless collared crop top adorned with floral details on the collar, paired with classic blue jeans, a black bag accented with a Sanrio Cinnamoroll plush charm, and metal-rimmed glasses, combining casual street style with a playful, stylish edge.

Talking about the release of this music video, ÊMIA stated in the YouTube description, “hi 🙂 this is the official music video for TRACK 2 (of 17) from upcoming self-written and self-produced debut album (title TBA). I initially wrote ‘The Plot’ to fantasize a version of myself where I do the bold things I picture myself doing….like reaching out to someone I haven’t spoken to in a long time. I like writing these kinds of songs because when I write about it, sometimes I ended up doing it. And I did.”

With “The Plot”, ÊMIA continues to showcase her unique blend of hyperpop energy, emotional storytelling, and creative vision, both as a musician and a director. From the heartfelt lyrics to the playful yet cinematic visuals, the single and video offer an immersive glimpse into her debut album, promising a project that is as ambitious as it is personal. Fans and newcomers alike are given every reason to pay attention to this rising indie-hyperpop sensation, as ÊMIA proves that she’s not just telling stories through her music—she’s living them.

Gut Feeling

Prior to the release of “The Plot”, ÊMIA introduced listeners to her debut album with the first single, “Gut Feeling,” released on July 30, 2025. The track laid the foundation for the hyperpop-infused, emotionally charged sound that fans are now seeing expanded in “The Plot.” From its confessional lyrics to its layered, experimental production, “Gut Feeling” showcased ÊMIA’s ability to blend vulnerability with bold musicality, giving audiences an early glimpse of the creative depth and personal storytelling that define her forthcoming debut album.

Written and produced by Anh Le (ÊMIA), “Gut Feeling” delivers an immediate emotional impact, combining indie-hyperpop, alternative-pop, and electronic dance elements into a warped, addictive sound. ÊMIA’s layered, expressive vocals ride the shifting production, carrying the tension of the lyrics as she navigates indecision, regret, and the push-and-pull between logic and intuition in relationships. The song’s structure mirrors these conflicting emotions, moving fluidly between introspective verses and soaring choruses, giving listeners a sense of the internal struggle that drives its narrative.

Released alongside the single is a music video co-directed by ÊMIA and Brittany Drays, with ÊMIA editing and Drays handling cinematography. This performance-focused video allows ÊMIA to shine, as she delivers the track in a red-lined corridor and a bright white studio set. Intercut throughout are scenes that connect directly to the song, showing ÊMIA boarding a plane, speaking on the airport telephones, and settling into her seat. These early sequences establish the narrative and guide viewers toward the more dynamic performance moments.

Once the focus shifts to the performance sequences, ÊMIA moves through a series of expressive poses in a freestyle choreography, each transition hitting the rhythm of the track and connecting with the audience through movement and expression. Her passion is evident in every pose and glance at the camera, evoking the energy of British singer Griff with a Vietnamese-American twist. The video closes with ÊMIA standing outside the airport, preparing to walk away, leaving viewers with a sense of longing and anticipation that perfectly mirrors the song’s emotional journey.

“Gut Feeling” solidifies ÊMIA’s reputation as a boundary-pushing indie-hyperpop artist, showcasing her ability to merge emotional honesty with inventive production and captivating visuals. From the introspective lyrics and dynamic soundscape to the expressive performance in the music video, the single demonstrates the depth and versatility she brings to her debut album. With this release, ÊMIA not only invites listeners into her world but also proves that she is an artist capable of turning personal experience into music that resonates widely, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting and highly anticipated full-length project.
