The eagerly awaited Genie trailer for the upcoming Melissa McCarthy film has now been unveiled, and it guarantees to infuse the holiday season with a touch of magic. Written by the acclaimed writer-director Richard Curtis, known for his work on Love Actually, Genie is set to premiere on Peacock on November 22, 2023, in the US, and on Sky Cinema and NOW from December 1, 2023, in the UK.
In this enchanting Christmas comedy, Melissa McCarthy takes on the role of Flora, the titular character, who becomes an unexpected source of assistance for the despondent Bernard, portrayed by Paapa Essiedu. Through their unique friendship, they embark on a heartwarming journey, discovering how the power of love can unlock the magic of the holidays.
Bernard’s journey takes a tumultuous twist, marked by a string of misfortunes. From the heartache of missing his daughter’s birthday to the pain of his wife’s departure and the loss of his job, his life seems to unravel. In a serendipitous moment, he stumbles upon what appears to be an ordinary jewellery box, unwittingly unlocking the enchanting genie Flora. Trapped in the box for more than two millennia due to a historical misunderstanding with a sorcerer back in 77 B.C., Flora embarks on a mission to fulfil Bernard’s every wish, with her ability to grant unlimited wishes. Amid this newfound magic, Bernard’s ultimate goal is to reignite the love within his family just in time for the holiday season.
The screenplay for Genie is based on Richard Curtis’s 1991 teleplay Bernard and the Genie and is directed by Sam Boyd, the creator of Love Life. The star-studded cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Paapa Essiedu, Alan Cumming, Denée Benton, Luis Guzmán, Marc Maron, Jordyn McIntosh, Tate Ellington, LaChanze, Nyasha Hatendi, Lyman Chen, and John Cashin. The film is a collaborative effort between Universal and Working Title, with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Riva Marker, and Richard Curtis among the producers. Additionally, McCarthy, Caroline Jaczko, Alexandra Loewy, Sarah-Jane Robinson, Nicole King, and Stacy O’Neil serve as executive producers for the project.
