The track was released on 19 September 2023 as an advance cut from the band’s self-titled debut album, which followed on 6 June 2024. It mixes rock, grunge, and pop in a story about wanting out. The song follows a man whose luck has run dry. His girlfriend has thrown him out, his belongings are stuffed into bin bags, and his boots have holes in the soles. Rather than sink, he pictures Bangkok as the place where he can shake off his blues and begin again.

It’s a feeling plenty of listeners will recognise: the daydream of being anywhere but here when life stops matching the one you’d planned. The band play it with a sense of humour, but there’s real feeling underneath. The character is trying to take back control and find something worth looking forward to.

Musically, Vicious Kitty describe their sound as an edgy blend of rock, grunge, and pop, shaped by years of playing around Seattle and along the West Coast. That live experience also explains the band’s love of high-energy shows.

The music video captures the band’s live energy, with the members performing in front of a green screen that plays a changing mix of visuals behind them. One clip gets particular focus: a car’s windscreen with rain pouring down and the wipers sweeping back and forth as it drives along the road. Short intercut clips run throughout, most of them presumably showing Bangkok or Bangkok-related scenes.

The group is led by Matt Tantrum, also known as Matthew Aird, a long-time fixture of the Seattle scene and an original member of Sea City Dolls. He writes the songs and plays guitar, alongside bassist Tony Terlicker, formerly of Cry Action. Drummer Chris “Stixx” Gartland is the newest member of the trio, stepping in after original drummer Jimmy St Bichthin was unable to continue with the band. Gartland joined after the video was filmed, so he doesn’t appear in it, but he’s set to join the band on their upcoming Midwest tour.

A jagged red-and-black hockey demon with white eyes appears beneath tilted lime-green “Vicious Kitty” lettering, creating a fierce, energetic sports logo.

“Bangkok City”, by Vicious Kitty, is available to download and stream, right now, across all platforms. The official video is out now on YouTube.
