Kapture, thank you for joining us today. Let’s start by discussing your latest single, “Sailed”. Could you share the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you personally?
The inspiration behind “Sailed” came from my abusive past with my father and him saying “the ship has sailed” when referring to wanting a relationship with me. This song is me letting go of the trauma and pain he instilled in me. I have become a strong and independent woman because of these life experiences and all I can do from this point forward is let go of him and hold on to the people that hold my heart and pick me up when I’m down, which is my mom and two sisters.
“Sailed” delves into some deeply personal and emotional themes from your past. How did you decide to open up about your traumatic childhood experiences in your music?
I had thought about writing this song for a while, and at first, I held back from wanting to share these personal experiences. Listening to other music that other artists have written made me more open to being more personal in my music. I want to reach other people who have had similar experiences and let them know that they are not alone.
The lyrics of “Sailed” are quite poignant and moving. Can you tell us about the creative process behind writing this song?
The creative process behind “Sailed” was very simple. I had my producer Sam J Garfield start with playing the guitar and from there everything came together. The lyrics are explaining what some of my experiences were and how the abuse traumatised me.
“Sailed” has a unique acoustic vibe. What motivated you to choose this particular musical direction for this track?
This track is not my typical alternative rap/pop track. I wanted this song to have a softer approach to it than my other songs because I feel that it shows the emotion in the song. I feel the acoustic production allows for a raw and intimate atmosphere.
Can you elaborate on how the production of “Sailed” complements the lyrical content and emotional depth of the song?
The acoustic sound conveys the vulnerability of this track, aligning with the emotions expressed in the lyrics. The guitar and piano accentuates the emotional nuances, allowing listeners to connect more deeply with the message and sentiment of the song. Sam J Garfield did an amazing job on the production of this song allowing me to be clearly heard leaving the emotional impact of the song’s message.
You’ve mentioned that music was your source of relief during difficult times. How did you first discover your passion for music, and when did you decide to pursue it professionally?
I have had a journal since I was 16 that I would write my thoughts and experiences in. It has been my place to get things off my chest. I have always been really into rap/hip-hop music. When I saw my brother-in-law creating music it inspired me to turn my journal into music and move out here to California so I could have the resources I need in order to create.
Moving from Florida to Los Angeles must have been a significant step in your career. What prompted this move, and how has it influenced your musical journey?
Moving from Florida to Los Angeles was a huge step in my career. I felt that the resources I needed were out here in LA along with a fresh start for myself. I have been so grateful for the amazing opportunities I have had so far and all the support from my friends and family.
Kapture, your stage name is both unique and memorable. Could you share the story behind how you chose “Kapture” and what significance it holds for you as an artist?
The name “Kapture” came along because in high school my nickname was “Polaroid” because I always liked to capture memories with photos. I was originally going to keep the stage name “Polaroid” but there were quite a few Polaroid’s so, I felt Kapture was still relatable and being spelt with a K made it unique and fitting for me. This also was the start of my new beginning.
“Sailed” has the potential to resonate with many listeners who have experienced adversity. How do you hope your music can help others going through similar challenges?
I want “Sailed” to be able to be there for people who have been through or are currently going through a similar situation. I feel that my experiences have made me a stronger person and I think that it is important for people to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel and these experiences don’t have to affect you forever, you can have a new beginning.
In your journey as an artist, who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?
I feel that the artists who surround me on a day-to-day basis have influenced my music the most. Exposure to innovative musicians has inspired me to experiment with unconventional sounds, structures, and techniques, pushing the boundaries of my current sound and style.
You’ve been journaling since the age of 16. How has this practice contributed to your songwriting and artistic expression?
Journaling has allowed me to express my thoughts and experiences. Turning these experiences into lyrics while sharing my story allows me to reflect on the past and admire my growth. I feel journaling has inspired my music and showed me new sides to art and creativity.
We’re aware of the power of storytelling, here at Good Star Vibes. How do you approach storytelling through your music, especially when dealing with personal and sensitive topics?
When dealing with personal topics I approach storytelling by being genuine and honest about my experiences. It’s important to me that the audience feels they can connect and relate to my music. This song in particular allowed me to heal and find closure with my traumatic past which entailed me being vulnerable in order to share my story.
Lastly, what message or advice would you like to share with aspiring artists who may be facing their own challenges and seeking to break into the music industry?
My advice to aspiring artists would be to connect with people and seek feedback from others to improve your work. The music industry is challenging and connecting with other musicians who can offer valuable insights on your work is important. It’s also important to hold your head up high and learn from the challenges that may come your way. Staying committed to your goals and knowing that the time and effort you put in is what you’ll get out.
