ITV has announced a tense new psychological drama titled Gone, bringing together Eve Myles (Torchwood, The Guest, Coldwater) and David Morrissey (Sherwood, The Walking Dead, The Long Shadow) for a gripping cat-and-mouse story set in Bristol. The series takes partial inspiration from the book “To Hunt a Killer” by Julie Mackay and Robert Murphy. The six-part series comes from acclaimed writer George Kay, whose previous work includes The Long Shadow, Hijack, and Lupin, with direction by BAFTA winner Richard Laxton, known for Him & Her, Joan, and Mrs Wilson.

Produced by New Pictures and George Kay’s Observatory Pictures, in association with All3Media International, the drama unfolds across a private school, the quiet suburbs, and an ominous nearby woodland. At the heart of the mystery is Headmaster Michael Polly, portrayed by David Morrissey, who finds himself under intense scrutiny following the sudden disappearance of his wife, Sarah. Known in the community for his discipline and composure, Michael Polly presents a calm exterior that only deepens the uncertainty surrounding the case.
Leading the investigation is Detective Annie Cassidy, played by Eve Myles. Annie Cassidy is sharp, instinctive and relentless in her pursuit of the truth, quickly recognising cracks in the headmaster’s meticulous façade. As she pushes further into the case, the dynamic between Annie Cassidy and Michael Polly becomes increasingly fraught, building a taut psychological battle that drives the story forward.
Speaking about the role, Eve Myles said, “I’m thrilled to be playing Detective Annie Cassidy in George Kay’s brilliantly written drama Gone. Annie is a fascinating character, intuitive, gutsy and doesn’t suffer fools, but she has met her match in Michael Polly, who is a formidable adversary played by David Morrissey. It’s wonderful to be directed by Richard Laxton, and I can’t wait for the audience to see it.”
David Morrissey echoed that excitement by stating, “I’m delighted to be reunited with George Kay and the wonderful team at New Pictures. And to be working for the first time with the amazing Eve Myles and Richard Laxton.”
As the search for Sarah Polly intensifies, the pressure surrounding the case continues to build. Michael Polly’s calm exterior and lack of visible emotion only deepen Detective Annie Cassidy’s unease, prompting her to look closer at the inconsistencies that begin to surface. Her instincts tell her that something is amiss, raising the question of what Michael Polly may be hiding—and why. This tension sits at the heart of the series, weaving together a mystery that probes the limits of trust, trauma, and the hidden power structures within elite institutions.
The story also widens through the involvement of Sarah and Michael’s daughter, Alana, played by Emma Appleton (Clique, Everything I Know About Love, The Killing Kind). As a teacher at the same school, her position blurs personal and professional boundaries, bringing a more intimate perspective to the unfolding events. Beyond the central trio, Gone features an extensive ensemble cast including Jennifer Macbeth (Maternal, Grace), Arthur Hughes (Shardlake, The Innocents), Nicholas Nunn (Clique, The Victim, Sexy Beast), and Elliot Cowan (King & Conqueror, Krypton, Lost in Austen).
The forthcoming series is also set to star Billy Barratt (Invasion, Mr Selfridge), Rupert Evans (Moonflower Murders, Charmed (2018), The Man In The High Castle), Jodie McNee (Britannia, Hollington Drive, The Gathering), Oscar Batterham (Obsession, True Love, The Death of Bunny Munro) and Clare Higgins (Hellraiser, Ready Player One, The Sandman, The Worst Witch), each adding further layers to the drama.

Polly Hill, ITV’s Director of Drama, praised the creative team by stating, “I am so delighted to be working with George, Willow, and Richard on this brilliant new police procedure. Gone is a wonderful new drama which puts Detective Annie Cassidy, played by Eve Myles, up against Michael Polly, played by David Morrissey, the prime suspect in the case of his missing wife. Did he do it? The amazing team on and off screen make a beautifully compelling story and one that I am sure will keep the audience guessing.”
George Kay also added, “After teaming up with ITV and New Pictures for true crime drama The Long Shadow, I’m delighted to be working with them again to create a new police drama. Inspired by real-life research, Gone sees the excellent Eve Myles’s overlooked Detective Annie Cassidy go head-to-head with main suspect Michael Polly, played by the superb David Morrissey. In a story about privilege and prejudice, the truth is tantalisingly close. Or at least, that’s what Annie thinks…”
Alongside writer and co-producer George Kay and director Richard Laxton, the production team includes producer Mark Hedges (Hanna, The Rising) and executive producers, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-nominated Willow Grylls (Des, The Missing), and BAFTA Award-nominated Matt Sandford (The Long Shadow). Gone draws partial inspiration from the book “To Hunt a Killer” and the work of former Detective Superintendent Julie Mackay, who, along with ITV Crime Correspondent Robert Murphy, serves as a consultant on the series, both of whom are co-authors of the aforementioned book.
Gone will air on ITV and STV, with streaming available on ITVX and STV Player.
