Indie-folk duo Somewhere in Between, featuring Deena Robertson and Austin Bisnow, have officially released their debut EP titled “Lighthouse + Tomorrow”. This four-track collection highlights their exceptional vocal talents and storytelling, with each track unfolding a deeply personal narrative that speaks to resilience, love, and overcoming adversity. This acts as the follow-up to their debut double a-side single “Mr & Mrs + Wildflower”.
The EP was entirely written by Somewhere in Between, while Austin Bisnow took on the production. It opens with the title track, “Lighthouse”, a soft, guitar-driven ballad that beautifully highlights Deena Robertson’s clear, ethereal vocals. Her storytelling immediately draws listeners in with the captivating first line, “Tell me, tell me your story.” The pre-chorus harmonisations are mesmerising, leading into an alternative-pop chorus that brightens the track’s atmosphere. Bisnow joins Robertson for the second verse, showcasing their seamless vocal chemistry. Both artists effortlessly deliver a flawless performance, setting a high bar for the rest of the EP.
“Tomorrow”, which has been co-produced by Andy Barr, sees Austin Bisnow take centre stage with a slight indie-country twist layered into the duo’s signature indie-folk and alternative-pop blend. His vocals shine against the backdrop of subtle piano chords, expressing a heartfelt longing for the new day to begin. As the track progresses, a violin enters, creating a sense of urgency as if something is chasing him. The added haunting harmonies of this duo and the stirring violin in the final moments intensify the emotional weight of the track, leaving listeners wondering whether tomorrow will come in time.
Co-written by Adam Schmalholz, the third track, “Wildflower”, is a laidback indie-folk gem with Deena Robertson’s vocals once again taking the spotlight. Her voice soars effortlessly through the notes, blending falsetto with rich upper-range melodies. The song’s lyrics about wanting to be brave and free like a wildflower carry extra weight knowing Robertson’s personal battle with cancer. Her ability to sing, despite facing a life-threatening diagnosis that could have taken her voice, adds a powerful layer to the song’s emotional depth.
Closing the EP is the RY X co-produced deeply personal track, “Mr & Mrs”, a tribute to the couple’s wedding vows, which they chose to record after Robertson’s cancer diagnosis. The song, written and recorded just days before her surgery, feels like a heartfelt promise between two people in the face of uncertainty. Their love for each other radiates through every note, and listeners are treated to an intimate moment between two artists who have navigated immense challenges, both personal and professional.
Somewhere in Between’s journey is deeply rooted in resilience, particularly when Deena Robertson was diagnosed with a life-threatening tumour on the roof of her mouth. The diagnosis not only threatened her ability to speak but also put her future in music at risk, as she faced the possibility of never being able to sing again. In the face of this uncertainty, Robertson and Austin Bisnow turned to songwriting as a way to cope, crafting “Mr & Mrs” just days before her intricate surgery.
The outcome of the surgery was uncertain, but Deena Robertson’s strength and determination saw her not only regain her voice but emerge more powerful than ever. Now, with her voice fully restored, she and Austin Bisnow pour their experiences into the music they create, infusing every note with the love and resilience that defines their partnership.
