In their debut album release, “Stories Untold”, Somewhere in Between invites listeners into a collection drenched in raw emotion and rich storytelling. The indie-folk duo made up of Austin Bisnow and Deena Robertson, delivers a nine-track LP of heartfelt songs that resonate deeply with their personal journey. Known for their ethereal live performances, the duo is transforming their story into musical magic, making “Stories Untold” a milestone in their career and a testament to both artistry and endurance.
Following the success of their debut EP, “Stories Untold” is a natural evolution that showcases the musical and lyrical talents of both Bisnow and Robertson. Their journey into music together started with a powerful origin—writing their wedding vows as a song, a poetic gesture that has since become their single, “Mr & Mrs”. This track, like much of the album, comes from a place of deep love and vulnerability, especially given the couple’s story of resilience in the face of Robertson’s cancer diagnosis. “Mr & Mrs” served as the album’s first single and captured the delicate yet unwavering bond that they share.
Throughout “Stories Untold”, there is a sense of intimacy and honesty that is rarely found in contemporary music. The first track on the album is the focus track, “Beautifully Bizarre”, which sees the duo channel themes of love, uncertainty, and the beauty of life’s unexpected turns, while introducing the audience to their gentle progressive indie-pop and their emotional artistry. This focus track feels like a representation of the album’s core, celebrating the strength of relationships and the unpredictability of life.
This is followed by “F*ck Being Perfect”, which sees Deena Robertson take the lead vocals, showing off her gorgeous voice and effortless heartfelt delivery. Delving into empowering lyrics about being who you really are and being proud of it, regardless of what others think. Considering her story, it’s no wonder that this track hits us right in the heart as life really is precious and who wants to spend it trying to be perfect?
The title track sees Austin Bisnow take the lead with the duo adding harmonies for the chorus. The tuneful track has an addicting hook in the verses, easily capturing the audience, with Bisnow delving into his emotions, giving a different take that contrasts the previous track. Where “F*ck Being Perfect” was an empowering be-yourself sort of song, this one sends out questions to the universe as he contemplates what life could have been like. It’s a powerful track that is only emphasised more when you consider the ups and downs they’ve been through with Robertson’s cancer diagnosis. Add the weight of that to Bisnow’s incredible soulful voice and it’s no wonder this became the title track of the album.
The fourth track on the album is “Winter”, where Bisnow continues to take the lead as the acoustic guitar sets a wintery feel and tone throughout. The rhythmic track is emboldened by strong harmonies from the duo during the chorus with lyrics that dive into the sadness that surrounded the duo during their challenging times and how the season of winter can be depressing and full of sorrow; however, spring and summer follows which brings light and happiness, and so the lyrics touch upon hopefulness and belief that nothing is fully foretold.
The following tracks on Stories Untold are drawn from the duo’s recent EP, “Lighthouse + Tomorrow”, which we previously reviewed in-depth here. Opening with “Lighthouse”, a serene, guitar-driven ballad, the album invites listeners to experience Deena Robertson’s clear and captivating vocals. Her storytelling prowess is immediately evident, with Austin Bisnow joining her for a seamless vocal blend that radiates warmth. “Tomorrow” follows, showcasing Austin’s voice alongside a delicate indie-country twist, punctuated by stirring harmonies and a haunting violin that adds an evocative touch.
“Wildflower” offers a laidback indie-folk ambience, with Robertson’s vocals soaring effortlessly, encapsulating the track’s themes of bravery and freedom with an added poignancy. Lastly, “Mr & Mrs” stands as a deeply personal moment, capturing the couple’s wedding vows recorded just before Robertson’s surgery. The song radiates their love and resilience, making it a powerful close to their debut album.
In “Stories Untold”, Somewhere in Between has crafted an album that’s as deeply personal as it is universally relatable. With each track, Deena Robertson and Austin Bisnow invite listeners into a vulnerable yet empowering space, sharing stories of strength, love, and self-discovery. Their unique blend of indie-folk, alternative pop, and introspective lyricism creates an emotive journey, with both artists bringing their individual strengths to the foreground while seamlessly harmonising throughout. This album is a testament to the duo’s chemistry and artistry, resulting in an unforgettable listening experience that resonates well beyond the final note.
While Bisnow brings his extensive experience as a songwriter—having penned hits for major artists like David Guetta, John Legend, and Jon Batiste—Deena Robertson’s voice adds an irreplaceable, authentic dimension that completes their sound. Her voice, once at risk due to her cancer diagnosis, now rings with newfound clarity and purpose, imbuing “Stories Untold” with a unique, lived-in warmth.
Ultimately, “Stories Untold” captures the essence of Somewhere in Between’s story—a couple brought together not only by love but by resilience and a shared passion for music. The album flows seamlessly, each song revealing a different chapter in their lives. It’s an inspiring album that reminds listeners of the healing power of music and the beauty that emerges from life’s most challenging moments.
