British artist and multi-instrumentalist Bird has kicked off a new chapter in her career with the release of her single “The Film” last Friday. The track offers the first taste of her forthcoming EP “Strange as Folk” and dropped on the same day she took the stage at Nashville’s City Winery Lounge for her official AmericanaFest showcase. This acts as the follow-up to her latest EP, titled “Heads or Tales”.

Drawing listeners into an evocative world of cinematic melancholy, “The Film”—which has been written by Janie Price (Bird) and produced by Price and Pete Davis—explores themes of heartbreak, memory, and disillusionment. Written during the stillness of the COVID lockdown in her hometown of London, the track blends Americana, folk, indie pop, and a hint of folk horror into a uniquely atmospheric sound. Layering gentle ukulele and banjo with shimmering production touches, this singer-songwriter crafts a soundscape that feels hushed and expansive, inviting listeners into the emotional world that inspired the track.

Effortlessly drawn from the heart, Bird’s vocals are as poignant as ever, while her signature Americana sound continues to evolve. This track showcases how far she has pushed her artistry, pairing familiar warmth with a richer, more immersive edge. Her voice connects deeply with listeners, carrying a soulful honesty and the weight of lived experience. The way she uses vocalise to shape the song heightens its sincerity, weaving seamlessly with the instrumental layers to create something both intimate and expansive.

Speaking about the single, Bird described it as “about the inevitable void that we can step into from time to time and how this can be triggered by something as simple as watching a film and the memories and emotions that can conjure up… It’s also essentially about that gap between expectation and reality, and how beautiful and painful that space can be.”

Building on the momentum of her previous EP “Heads or Tales”, Bird is stepping into a new creative phase with “Strange as Folk”, which will roll out gradually over the autumn. Alongside the music, she is also broadening her filmmaking journey with a short documentary about Roy Orbison titled You Found A Friend in Elvis. This follows her acclaimed semi-autobiographical short film Wider Than The Sky, which won nine international awards, including the Aviva Short Film Best Drama Award—an event Good Star Vibes had the privilege of attending at its showcase last year.

Bird also wrote, recorded and released the soundtrack album for Wider Than The Sky. The film, starring Willow Bell and directed by Phil Taylor, highlighted her ability to fuse personal experience with art—a quality that now seems to be shaping both her new music and her upcoming documentary.

“The Film”, by Bird, is available to download and stream, right now, across all platforms. Look out for her forthcoming EP, titled “Strange as Folk”.
