Mountain Climer, the solo project of singer-songwriter Jeremy Climer, has officially released “Paper Gowns”, a deeply introspective new single that reflects on life’s fleeting moments and the weight of past choices. Produced by Paul Mahern—renowned for his work with John Mellencamp and The Blake Babies—the track weaves together haunting melodies and rich instrumentation to create an emotionally charged listening experience. This acts as the follow-up to last year’s EP, titled “Reconstruction”.
Accompanying the release is a lyric video offering a visual complement to the song’s poignant themes. “Paper Gowns” features an impressive lineup of musicians, including Heidi Lynne Gluck on bass and piano as well as backing vocals, Shannon Hayden on cello and electric guitar, Devon Ashley on drums and percussion, and David England on lead guitar.
Originally conceived as a slow ballad, Mahern encouraged Climer to increase the tempo, adding a sense of urgency that enhanced the song’s emotional weight. “Shannon’s guitar work is like a little bit of sugar to help the medicine go down,” Climer shared, highlighting the balance between the song’s dark themes and its melodic allure.
The track brings an Americana beat styled with folk-pop-rock around a dark lyrical message. The lyrics reflect on past choices as life comes to a head. The intricate beat flows through ups and downs, bringing both light and shade to the song’s theme, effortlessly helping it to become a statement piece.
Talking about the creation of the track, Climer said, “The morning of the first session, I had never even talked to Devon and had only met Shannon and Heidi the night before. They hadn’t heard a note of my music (only a playlist of reference tracks I had given Paul) and we sat down and played like the four of us had been a band for ten years. To borrow Paul’s word for the way things went, it was magical.”
The track is part of Climer’s upcoming album, “Before You Turn Out the Lights”, a full-length project that continues his journey of introspective songwriting and sonic evolution.
