Brooklyn-based modern heavy electronic band TRIP VILLAIN has just released their latest single, “Lowbender”, along with an intense, visually striking music video. Known for blending the crushing weight of doom metal with electronic beats, this four-piece band continues to push boundaries with their unique sound, and “Lowbender” is no exception. This acts as the follow-up to the HOTH x NURSE remix of their previous single “You Flew a Plane Into My Heart”, the original of which featured Goner.
Written by the band—Damien Moffitt, Jack Florio, Jon Ehlers, and Josh Musto—whilst it was produced by Ehlers and Musto, “Lowbender” is described by the band as a “love letter to BASS”, it embodies the heart and soul of TRIP VILLAIN’s sound. Mixing it up with hard rock and EDM, this band doesn’t hold back bringing in some metal influences that deliver a shining beacon of light amongst the house tracks that are popular at the moment. They bring a progressive sound as they introduce instruments into the mix, blending electronica with hard rock, effortlessly and expertly.
Taking it to a further level, Josh Musto jumps in with brilliant rock vocals, bringing the metal vibes to the track. His voice transcends the track through the loops and rhythms of the electronica metal adding a narrative that links in with the flow of the song. Towards the end of the track, the instruments grab the spotlight showcasing the band’s incredible skills and ability to make you feel the song deep inside.
Talking about the track, the band said, “‘Lowbender’ is a love letter to BASS, the heart and soul of TRIP VILLAIN’s sound. It follows a psychedelic-induced journey, in which a mortal man sheds his physical form and transforms into an omnipotent spirit made of pure BASS energy, known as the Lowbender—a nod to the Airbender. The song crescendos in the final 30 seconds into a cataclysmic wave of BASS, symbolizing the Lowbender annihilating most of humanity with his overwhelming power.”
In addition to the single release, the band has dropped a visually captivating, psychedelic music video directed by Josh Musto. The video showcases the band’s electrifying performance through layered, trance-like edits that mirror the song’s hypnotic vibe. Musto not only takes the lead on vocals but also shares guitar duties with Jack Florio, both delivering intense riffs that complement the track’s liveliness. Damien Moffitt’s drumming kicks off the video with a powerful opening where he continues that top energy throughout, while Jon Ehlers’s masterful use of synthesisers adds a rich, electronic pulse to the soundscape which is matched with the edits. The video’s trippy visuals perfectly match the song’s bass-heavy journey, adding an extra layer of depth and intensity.
This band’s unique fusion of doom metal and modern electronic music has made them a standout in Brooklyn’s underground scene, especially in Bushwick, where they’ve played a key role in the neighborhood’s electronic renaissance. Known for hosting shows that seamlessly blend metal with electronic DJ sets, their rhythm-driven sound is both crushingly heavy and irresistibly danceable. With this track, they further solidify their reputation as one of the most innovative crossover bands, pushing the boundaries of both genres.
