The multi-talented artist, Hua Li 化力, known for skillfully navigating the realms of mixed heritage, bisexuality, and socio-political themes, unveils her latest musical gem with the release of “Cherrier”. This captivating single takes audiences on a journey through the evolving landscapes of Plateau-Mont-Royal, Montreal, capturing the essence of late-noughties experiences in a compelling blend of vulnerability and empowerment. This acts as the follow-up to her previous single “Closing Time” which features KOREA TOWN ACID and Boogie Man.

“Cherrier” serves as a sonic time machine, seamlessly oscillating between 2009 and 2019 through addictive beats, encapsulating Hua Li 化力’s endeavour to confront haunting memories of places and individuals she aimed to avoid while being drawn back to them as a performer and DJ. Produced by Alexander Thibault, the song is embraced by a captivating synth bass line, delving into the intricate depths of the artist’s personal narrative, unfurling a tapestry of emotions and experiences.

Through poignant lyrics and evocative melodies, “Cherrier” serves as an alternative-pop canvas with dream-like elements, painting vivid images of Hua Li 化力’s journey with her artistic lyrics that are only substantiated even more so by the infectious beats of the song. The alluring rhythm effortlessly makes this track one that deserves to be on repeat.

In the accompanying music video, we watch her perform this track in a carefree manner as she walks down Rue Cherrier, Montreal and the connecting area, showcasing her engaging presence. Her flawless ability to present her reclamation of these places in a music video shows her incredible artistry as very few would have been able to envision this into a video. The visual is supported by engaging clips bringing a nostalgic energy which is also emboldened by the surprising editing techniques that align well with the beats, the ’90s coming-of-age narrative of the lyrics, and the time switch vibes inspired by 2009 and 2019.

Reflecting on the creative process, Hua Li 化力 shares, “Thankfully, since writing this song, I’ve been able to kiss again on Rue Cherrier and reclaim these parts of the city from a place of healing and celebration.”

She delved into the making of this track, stating, “[Longtime collaborator] Alex and I both come from this very instrumentalized, technical, improvised jazz world. We listen in a very similar way, but, you know, 90% of the time we’re listening to rap and electronic music.”

Beyond her solo endeavours, Hua Li 化力’s repertoire includes co-writing and performing on Gayance’s 2023 Polaris short-listed album, “Masquerade”, and touring as the DJ for Inuk electro-pop sensation Riit. Her various touring credits have seen her travel worldwide including being the former touring DJ for Cadence Weapon, and she has also toured with Fat Tony. Her magnetic stage presence has graced venues globally, from Reykjavik’s Secret Solstice Festival to prestigious events like the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Pride Toronto. Notably, she also hosts the popular web series, Landr Audio’s Learn Music, showcasing her multifaceted talents.

In this new single, this exciting and inspiring artist invites listeners to experience the luminosity and depth of her artistry. Through poignant lyrics and evocative melodies, she illustrates the delicate balance between nurturing nostalgia and embracing transformation, underscoring the beauty found within moments of sound transition.
