New York-based rock collective Circus Mind have unleashed their latest single, “Barstool Hero”, a boundary-pushing blend of reggae grooves, psychedelic textures, and rock energy that sets the stage for their upcoming album, due later this year. This acts as the follow-up to their previous single “Waste of Time“.

What begins as a laid-back reggae rhythm soon unravels into something far darker, with “Barstool Hero” charting the story of a flawed central figure. As the track progresses, the band switch gears with towering choruses, spiralling dub passages, and a searing guitar solo that ties it all together, showcasing their fearless ability to twist and transform sound mid-song.

The song constantly shifts between psychedelic rock and rhythmic reggae, creating a dynamic tension that draws listeners in and keeps them coming back for more. Over this eclectic backdrop, Circus Mind skillfully balance intricate instrumentation with classic rock–infused vocals, adding an edge of nostalgia while seamlessly carrying the track into reflections on fate, loss, and redemption. “Barstool Hero” proves that the band’s songs are more than just melodies—they are stories with depth and meaning that linger within every listener even after the track has finished.

Frontman Mark Rechler, who also serves as lead vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter, described the creation of “Barstool Hero” as something almost otherworldly. “I honestly think I was in a trance when I wrote this one,” says Rechler. “I was sort of there but not really. A friend had just passed away, and I guess there was something dark brewing inside me. When it was done, I didn’t even know what had happened or what it meant—but I knew it felt special.”

The new single carries all the hallmarks of Circus Mind’s approach to music: experimental yet accessible, emotionally charged yet playful. It’s both mysterious and bold, offering fans a tantalising preview of what’s in store on the upcoming record.

The rising band consists of Mark Rechler (keys and vocals), Brian Duggan (guitar), Michael Amendola (saxophone), Mathew Fox (bass), Steve Finkelstein (percussion), and Dan Roth (drums). Over the years, the band has developed a reputation for effortlessly moving between styles—whether that’s jazz-inspired grooves, reggae-infused rhythms, or high-energy rock. Their influences range from classics like Traffic, Steely Dan, and David Bowie to modern innovators such as Wilco and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

Having graced stages at festivals including Jazz Fest and the Great South Bay Music Festival, as well as iconic venues like Brooklyn Bowl and The Capitol Theatre, the band continue to prove their ability to surprise and captivate audiences. Their last album, “Bioluminate”, earned praise for its inventive fusion of New Orleans funk, Beatles-inspired pop, and rock sensibilities.

“Barstool Hero”, by Circus Mind, is available to download and stream, right now, across all platforms, via Outhouse Music. Don’t forget to look out for their forthcoming album, set to be released in the next few months.
