Capital Cities have dropped a brand new single, titled “Late For School”, continuing their run of infectious and genre-blending tracks. Best known for global hits like “Safe and Sound” and “Kangaroo Court”, the duo are now gearing up for their next full-length album, “Making Up The Rules”. This acts as the follow-up to their previous single release, “F*k It“.

Co-written and co-produced by Jonah Walsh, Ryan Merchant, and Sebu Simonian, “Late For School” arrives with a vibrant mix of indie-rock and alt-pop, carried by the band’s signature brass flourishes and an upbeat, playful energy. The track tells the story of someone determined to live life on their own terms—choosing individuality over conformity and finding freedom in breaking away from rigid expectations.

Starting off with a dream-pop soundscape that blends into subtle hyper-pop surrounded by identifiable indie-rock, Capital Cities nail progression throughout this track, flowing the listener into a spiral of energy that seeps and flows. Never too far from their signature brassy hooks, they slide an unforgettable instrumental segment that enriches this sound. While the track may be suggestive of this duo being two of the naughty boys in class, it’s also a reflection on who they are today, disruptors of the indie-pop-rock scene, breaking the rules of pop and rock, gifting listeners with an alternative genre route that we’re all bound to be invested in as they continue to carve their own career path.

Released just as the back-to-school season hits, the single plays with that theme while layering in the duo’s distinctive hooks and off-kilter creativity. It follows their recent track “F*k It”, which we praised for delivering “a powerful message wrapped in soft, laid-back vocals that create an effortlessly cool atmosphere.”

The duo’s latest single, “Late For School”, sets the stage for what fans can expect from “Making Up The Rules”: bold, unapologetic tracks that challenge boundaries while staying true to the duo’s flair for blending styles. With their knack for pairing catchy songwriting with left-field arrangements, this duo continue to prove why their music resonates with listeners worldwide.

“Late For School”, by Capital Cities, is available to download and stream, right now, across all platforms, via Lazy Hooks. Look out for their forthcoming third studio album, set to be titled “Making Up The Rules”.
