A powerful new drama lands on digital platforms today, offering a compelling look at the music industry’s hidden struggles. Freak Off is now available to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video with Apple TV, Google Play, and more coming soon. The film dives deep into the trials and triumphs of chasing stardom in an industry known for its glitz, grind, and unspoken power struggles.
Released by Breaking Glass Pictures, the film follows Ava, played by rising actress Ayla Demirci (best known for acting in a variety of music videos by the likes of Kid Rock, Zac Brown, Alex Miller, and Reed Foley), whose big break in the R&B world quickly turns into a battle for control, identity, and survival. When opportunity knocks, Ava quickly discovers that behind the backroom deals and blurred lines, not everything in the spotlight is as glamorous as it seems, especially when a leaked video threatens to derail her dreams.

Freak Off was written and directed by Ricky Burchell (most notable for directing Eating Me Up, One More Dream, and AM Radio), he also takes on the role of Renzo, a magnetic yet manipulative music producer at the centre of the chaos. Britney Mercedes Saysombath adds even more spark to the screen as Amara, a fast-rising rival with her own ambitions.
Although the script was completed before recent headlines rocked the music world, Freak Off arrives at a time when one of the industry’s most recognisable figures is on trial, facing a wave of disturbing allegations. The similarities are hard to ignore, making the film’s themes feel especially timely and eerily reflective of real-life power imbalances.
“We wanted to shine a light on what so many artists endure behind closed doors, where success is offered as bait, and consent becomes dangerously negotiable,” says Burchell.

By weaving Ava’s personal journey into a wider conversation about control and exploitation in the music world, Freak Off strikes a rare balance—intimate and vulnerable, yet bold and unflinching in its portrayal of power dynamics behind the scenes. It’s a raw character study wrapped in a timely reflection on who holds the reins in pop culture, and what it takes to take them back.
“We wanted to show how a moment of vulnerability can be weaponized,” Burchell explains. “Sex tapes still carry wildly different consequences depending on gender. Men often walk away empowered while women are left behind to rebuild their lives.”

Ava’s journey is accompanied by a standout original soundtrack, performed by Kalysta, that mirrors her evolution from a fresh talent full of promise to an artist navigating the pressures of image and control. The music adds emotional depth to her story, highlighting the shifts in both her sound and sense of self as the industry begins to reshape her.
At its core, Freak Off prompts important questions about who really holds the power in the music industry, and what that means for the artists caught in between. It’s a timely reminder to look beyond the surface and consider the true cost behind the spotlight.
Freak Off is available today on video-on-demand via Breaking Glass Pictures and can be rented or streamed right now on Amazon Prime, with Apple TV, Google Play, and many more coming soon. For UK viewers, it is also available to watch on Amazon Prime.
