This track allows this Black female rock artist to step fully into her power, handling guitar, bass, and vocals while driving the track’s ferocity. She’s joined by drummer Tom McGeoch, whose pounding rhythms fuel the song’s intensity, while GRAMMY-winning producer Darryl Swann, who has worked with Macy Gray and the Black Eyed Peas, brings a sharp edge to the final mix. Together, they’ve crafted a track that hits hard both sonically and emotionally.

From the very first note, Blake Red comes across as fierce, bold, and unapologetic, making the four-year wait more than worthwhile. Lyrically, she draws a parallel between the venom of a scorpion and the toxicity of harmful people, offering a sharp warning to stay vigilant. It’s a theme that feels universally relatable, delivered through a hard rock explosion that amplifies both her commanding vocals and striking lyricism.
Speaking on the release, this Chicago-born rock artist explained that the track channels the perspective of someone determined to call out toxicity and malice: “Scorpion describes a predator or any person who has bad intentions towards an innocent individual. It’s sung from the point of view of someone who refuses to stay silent about harmful behavior.”
The official music video, released alongside the track, takes the form of a performance visual, placing Blake Red in the studio as she brings this track to life. Clever editing techniques—layered frames, jittering blurs, sharp split-cuts, and mirrored imagery—distort the footage in a way that feels unsettling, as though the viewer has been injected with venom. The result connects seamlessly with the song’s lyrics, which compare the sting of a scorpion to the toxic influence of harmful people.
Beyond the immediate impact of “Scorpion”, fans can look forward to more, as the track paves the way for her upcoming EP “Out of the Cage”, set for release on October 3. The project, which marks this singer-songwriter’s first EP in four years, is dedicated to the memory of her late father and represents a bold new era for the artist both in the studio and on stage.
To celebrate, Blake Red will headline an EP release show in her hometown of Chicago at Epiphany Center for the Arts on the day of the EP’s arrival. For the Berklee College of Music graduate, “Out of the Cage” serves as both a personal triumph and an uncompromising artistic statement.
Breaking barriers in the alternative rock and metal scene as a Black female musician, Blake Red continues to carve out her own lane with fearless authenticity. Since her 2018 debut, she has built a reputation for powerful songwriting, high-voltage performances, and an unrelenting passion that fuels her every project. With “Scorpion” striking hard and “Out of the Cage” on the horizon, this Black female rock artist is set to remind the world why her presence in heavy music is impossible to ignore.
“Scorpion”, by Blake Red, is available to download and stream, right now, across all platforms. Look out for her forthcoming EP, “Out of the Cage”, set to be released on October 3, 2025.
