This week Canadian singer-songwriter Goldie Boutilier debuted her highly anticipated single and captivating music video, “The Actress”, marking a significant moment in her musical journey. The track serves as a precursor to her upcoming EP of the same name, slated for release later this year under the label ONErpm. This single acts as the follow-up to her sophomore EP that she unveiled last year, titled “Emerald Year”.

Written and produced by Goldie Boutilier, Simon Wilcox, and Thomas “Tawgs” Salter, “The Actress” is more than just a song for Boutilier—it’s a declaration of personal empowerment and artistic resilience. With her signature blend of cinematic allure and poignant lyricism, Boutilier explores themes of tragic romance, glamour, and reflective introspection.

Addictive from start to finish, Boutilier lives up to her previous releases and outdoes herself once again. Vocals on point, check. Incredible lyrics, check. A catchy backing track, check. This song has everything you want and more, determined to make you listen to it repetitively. There’s no doubt in our minds that this forthcoming EP is set to be her best yet, and this song alone has hooked us right in!

Official single cover artwork for "The Actress" which sees Goldie Boutilier's first name bordered round the edge while a drawing of her is in the middle with a variety of different drawings bordering her hinting at different characters she would play as an actress. Yellow and gold are the main colours of the image.

The awesome accompanying music video, filmed in Montréal, QC, directed by Kevin Calero and Wynn Holmes, featured on YouTube’s billboard in Times Square between June 7 to June 13—meaning today is the last chance to see it on the billboards—showcasing Boutilier’s visual and narrative prowess on a global stage.

It’s a performance-based visual which sees Boutilier add to her amazing song by transforming the lyrics into a brilliant narrative, which we easily get. Drawing us in from the get-go, we watch her start by running down a street, it next cuts to her in a dressing room, followed by her being on set for a photo shoot—where she puts on a bright blue skirt. Throughout the visual, it’s extremely suggestive and sultry, with some great dance shots that only expand this incredible story she’s telling.

Other scenes include a room with several mirrors where she looks stunning in a black outfit and a scene where she’s up in the fly tower dressed in a beautiful golden gown. The entire music video showcases Boutilier as the woman she’s describing in the song, the actress, and more so showcasing her movie that we’re in purely by watching—a perfect full circle introspective moment.

“This song is my triumphant return,” states Boutilier. “I’ve grown, conquered my demons, and now stand confident. It’s a sassy statement to men and anyone who believes they hold control over me. I used to claim I was a great actress due to a life spent pretending. Now, I am in the driver’s seat. I am The Actress, and everyone is an extra in my movie.”

Boutilier’s musical roots trace back to her childhood, influenced by legends like Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton. Her career trajectory has been marked by resilience and reinvention, from early performances in her family’s junkyard to signing with Interscope Records at just 21. After navigating various labels and aliases, she returned to her Nova Scotian roots, carving out a niche in alt-country with a distinctive Americana sound reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s.

Her recent EPs, including “The Cowboy Gangster Politician” and “Emerald Year”, have garnered critical acclaim and over 11 million streams, establishing Boutilier as a force in the independent music scene. Recognition from industry titans like Zane Lowe and Elton John, coupled with appearances at prestigious festivals such as Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, underscore her growing influence and artistic evolution.

Her upcoming EP, “The Actress”, promises to be her most introspective and compelling work yet. Delving into themes of integrity, vulnerability, and self-discovery, the EP chronicles her journey through the highs and lows of a tumultuous career in music. It’s a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment to authenticity in an industry often fraught with challenges.
