The six-part thriller comes from BAFTA-winning writer Ronan Bennett, known for his work on The Day of the Jackal and MobLand, and is already shaping up to be one of the broadcaster’s most ambitious scripted series. Filming is currently underway across multiple locations, including Manchester, Liverpool, London, and Paris, signalling a large-scale production with an international scope.

At the centre of Army of Shadows is a gripping reimagining of the classic story originally brought to life in Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 film and Joseph Kessel’s novel. While the original narrative explored the rise of the French Resistance during World War II, this new adaptation shifts the setting to an occupied Great Britain, offering a fresh and thought-provoking perspective.

In this reimagined version, Britain may still look familiar at first glance, but the reality is far more unsettling. Even the flags no longer represent what they once did, the news reaching the public is tightly controlled, and there is a growing sense that speaking openly comes with consequences. What appears to be everyday life is, in truth, a carefully managed environment where something deeper has shifted.

The story follows a former soldier known only as Berry, who begins to build a covert resistance network. Operating under a strict philosophy of patience and precision, Berry gradually brings together a group of ordinary individuals from different walks of life, including a soldier, a student, a radiographer, and a journalist. Each is forced to confront a defining choice as the situation around them becomes impossible to ignore.

Opposing them is a powerful state apparatus, led by a determined government minister intent on maintaining control, alongside an American intelligence operative named Jessie, whose capabilities make her a formidable presence.

The project has been produced and developed with the support of both the Melville family and the estate of Joseph Kessel, which is controlled by the Irish Red Cross, ensuring a connection to the original source material while allowing the new adaptation to explore its own direction.
